It’s not hard to conjure up visions of warm, steamy kitchens full of mouth-watering aromas around the holidays. It’s a time that many of us take to focus on family and friends coming together around food. Bringing this sensibility to our daily workaday lives is more challenging.
To encourage and to celebrate home cooking and the home cook, we’re proud to launch a special edition that will publish annually called Edible Austin COOKS!
Full of recipes, home entertaining and kitchen tips and stories that connect us to our sustainable foodie community here in Central Texas, COOKS! is available through the end of the year at locations where you will find our regular quarterly issues of Edible Austin. After that you may find it at the many festivals and special food events that we present or participate in all year long.
COOKS! is also available as a bonus for a limited time with gift subscriptions starting with our winter issue. Why subscribe, you might ask, when you can pick up our magazine for free? Aside from the convenience of having it delivered to your home, your subscription helps support many of the initiatives that we sponsor throughout the year, such as our fourth annual Edible Austin Eat Local Week, a celebration of the abundance of local food in Central Texas and a 100 percent fundraiser for Urban Roots.
And what a week we have planned for this year! Find all the details about Eat Local Week events as well as an updated listing of participating restaurants and markets on our website at edibleaustin.com. New this year is our special VIP Pass that gets you into nine of the Eat Local Week events at a discounted price. And you can buy tickets to all of the events in advance online by clicking here. Join us on Saturday, December 4 as we kick off the week with the ever-popular Urban Farm Bicycle Tour of Austin’s urban farming gems and community gardens. Later that day we’ll host a community Pig Roast and Harvest Dinner at Springdale Farm with special guests and live music. Wake up your senses with our Drink Local Coffee Festival hosted at Cuvée Coffee in Spicewood on Sunday. See and feast on Chocolat at the Alamo Drafthouse Benefeast on Monday. Drink Local Night with Central Texas distillers and the Tipsy Texan Cocktail Contest happens Tuesday, hosted by Péché at Cedar Street. Shop for local food treats for your holiday gift giving from Better Bites of Austin members at our Holiday Gift Fair hosted at City Hall on Wednesday. On Thursday, take progressive Fine Food and Art tour of Wally Workman Gallery, AMOA and Arthouse. Don’t miss A Conversation with Michael Pollan on Friday at Bass Concert Hall with our Farm Direct Showcase featuring more than 30 local food resources. End the week at our finale events on Saturday, December 11. In the morning, join us for our third annual Media Celebrity Cook Off at the SFC Farmers’ Market downtown. Then on Saturday afternoon, attend our first annual Texas Craft Brewers Mini-Festival at Black Star Co-op to sample new brews and local favorites. And all week long, celebrate local food by shopping at the markets and dining out at participating restaurants to experience the best of what our winter growing season brings us.
