This popular Cuban cooler made by muddling fresh mint with lime juice competes with margaritas in bars worldwide. Look for aromatic varieties of spearmint (not peppermint) for this drink—there’s even a Cuban “Mojito Mint” available in herb catalogs.

Easy

Fresh spearmint leaves, without stems, torn in half
teaspoons Granulated or turbinado sugar
2 ounces Fresh lime juice, preferable from Mexican (key) limes
Crushed Ice
2 ounces White rum
Splash of sparkling water
Fresh mint sprig and lime wedge, and/or sugarcane stir-stick for garnish

Mojito Directions

In a tall, sturdy glass, gently bruise the mint with the sugar using a muddler.

Mix in the lime juice and fill the glass with crushed ice.

Pour in the rum and stir in a splash of sparkling water. Garnish and serve.
